Welcome to Ancient Hopes: A Journey of Faith and Discovery

Dear Friends,
Welcome with open hearts to the Ancient Hopes community. I’m Fr. John Worgul, and it’s my joy to invite you on a remarkable journey through the landscapes of theological education and spiritual enrichment that have illuminated my path and, I hope, will enlighten yours as well.
My life has been a tapestry woven from many threads: academic pursuits in diverse theological traditions and profound spiritual experiences that have shaped my understanding of God and His works in our lives. My academic journey has been rich and varied, from the Baptist College of Bethel in St. Paul to the Presbyterian Westminster Theological Seminary in Philadelphia, culminating with a Ph.D. in Hebrew Bible from The Dropsie College in Philadelphia (since subsumed into the Judaica Department at the University of Penn). Yet, the spiritual mentors and communities along the way have truly molded my heart and spirit.
The Seminary of the East, with its innovative approach to adult education, and the Life in Jesus Community, with its daily rhythms of prayer, worship, and ministry, have taught me the invaluable lesson of living in faith collectively. These experiences have instilled in me a deep appreciation for the Church in all its diversity and beauty, guiding me to serve with passion and humility.
My spiritual journey has been a pilgrimage, leading my family and me through Anglicanism to the heart of the Catholic Church. This transition, inspired by a sacramental view of the world and the rich heritage of the Church Fathers, has been a profound homecoming. Serving as pastor at Saint Joseph Catholic Church in Eldersburg Maryland has been a privilege, allowing me to share the treasures of faith with others.
Let’s embark on this journey together, sharing stories, wisdom, and encouragement as we seek to grow closer to God and each other. Your questions, insights, and fellowship are the heart of Ancient Hopes.
Fr. John Worgul
